Unesco announced yesterday that the port of Liverpool was withdrawn from its World Heritage List, due to concerns about over-development projects that are losing its originality after years of development work near its Victorian ports.

Thirteen delegates voted in favor of the proposal to withdraw the port in northwest Britain from the list, while five members rejected, which exceeds the two-thirds majority required to withdraw a site from the World Heritage List.

This vote means that Liverpool will lose the status of the World Heritage Site that it has enjoyed since 2004 and which placed it in the ranks of famous sites such as the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.

For its part, the British government expressed great disappointment about this decision, noting that Liverpool still deserves to be listed on the World Heritage List due to the important role played by the docks in history and the city more broadly
