G-Live cancels Andrew Lawrence gigs over 'racist' EUROS final tweets Mon, 12 Jul 2021 16:00:00 +0100-Comedian Andrew Lawrence made 'racist' comments on Twitter about the England players following the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
Comedian Andrew Lawrence has been dropped by his agent and has had several of his upcoming gigs cancelled after making ‘racist’ comments about England’s Black footballers following last night’s Euro 2020 final.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have been subjected to disgusting racial abuse after missing penalties and Italy winning the tournament, with the Metropolitan Police warning ‘unacceptable’ behaviour ‘will not be tolerated’.
Weighing in on England’s defeat, Lawrence had tweeted: ‘All I’m saying is, the white guys scored.’
In a subsequent post, he added: ‘Equality, diversity, s*** penalties.’
Lawrence later said: ‘I can see that this has offended a lot of people, and I’m sorry that black guys are bad at penalties.’
A number of venues have decided to cancel Lawrence’s shows following his tweets and he has since deleted his profile on the microblogging site.
Hampshire’s Hanger Farm Arts Centre wrote: ‘Following the racist comments made by comedian Andrew Lawrence on Twitter we made the decision to cancel his show.
‘As a part of learning disability charity Minstead Trust, we work hard to promote inclusivity, provide safe spaces for everyone and have zero tolerance for racism.’
Worcester Live added: ‘Following recent tweets from Andrew Lawrence’s account we have stopped selling tickets for his show and removed from our website. Worcester Live do not support hate speech in any form and we are currently liaising with Andrew’s agent.
‘We will be in touch ASAP with an outcome.’
Meanwhile, Chesham Comedy Club tweeted him directly, saying: ‘I know you won’t particularly care, but we at Chesham comedy club will not tolerate racism in any form so please consider your booking with us cancelled.’
Lawrence’s agents, RBM Comedy, has also said they no longer represent Lawrence.

Surrey-born comedian Andrew Lawrence has received backlash after an alleged racist tweet was posted from his Twitter account during the Euros final at Wembley.
Offensive remarks about some of England’s black footballers emerged on the account following last night’s penalty shoot-out.
His gigs have now been pulled – including at Guildford’s G Live – as a result, leaving his forthcoming tour in tatters. And his Twitter account has been deleted, or suspended.
Andrew, who was born and schooled in Kingston upon Thames, is best known for his work in stand-up comedy, radio and television.
However, on Sunday evening (July 11) a tweet was posted commenting on the ethnicity of the players who missed their penalties for England.
After receiving criticism for the tweet he later refused to apologise and doubled down on the statement.
A statement from G Live today (Monday, July 12) said: “Andrew Lawrence’s performances in the Bellerby Studio at G Live have been taken off sale with immediate effect. We recognise that Andrew’s act treads the fine line between controversy and comedy; however, in this instance, Andrew’s comments on social media crossed that line.

“We support free speech, and will continue to present shows, acts and artists in our venue with a wide range of views. But words spoken freely are not without consequence.”
It added: “In the context of the online abuse being directed at some of England’s players following last night’s match we want to be clear that these views do not reflect our organisation. In these circumstances, it is impossible for us to continue with Andrew’s dates.
“Put simply – and however it is intended – racism isn’t funny. Ever.”
