When placed inside a new Swiss bioengineered device, a piece of skin the size of a small piece of metal can grow as a revolutionary machine to help millions of people suffering from debilitating burn injuries.

This new device allows the skin to be stretched to much larger sizes, by taking healthy, undamaged skin from the patient to “grow” the skin in the laboratory.

This technology is known as “Denograft”, and it is already used in treatments, although the trials of the second phase did not end until recently, because for a small number of people this method of making the skin is very advanced, and it is the only option that exists for their condition either.

Because of a rare disease or major burns.

“Currently we can multiply the surface area of the original sample by a factor of 100, and eventually our goal is to reach a factor of 500,” said co-founder and director of technology developers Daniela Marino at Cutis.

The machine can perform several patching works simultaneously without any manual input, which provides an opportunity to significantly reduce production time and costs.

According to Good News, the market for skin reconstruction in case of scars or burns is estimated to be worth nearly $2 billion, while there are only about 40 people working full time in the sector.

Marino expects to complete phase three trials sometime after 2023, with the procedure after that to be available primarily in Europe
