Industry watchers have expressed surprise that Nintendo did not announce a more drastic upgrade for the device in its fifth year on the market.

“It’s a great upgrade for handheld players, but the general expectation was that the new hardware would be significantly more powerful,” said Serkan Toto, founder of consultancy Kantan Games.

Anticipation among gamers was spurred by media reports that Nintendo was about to release a Switch with an upgraded central processor unit (CPU) and 4K output when connected to a TV — both not found in the new device.

“I expect a significant portion of current major owners to upgrade to the OLED version even without the additional graphic power,” said Piers Harding Rolls, head of gaming research at Ampere Analysis.

The new device delivers sharper images but does little to bridge the performance gap with rivals Sony and Microsoft, which launched next-generation consoles last year.

These devices are hard to find, as manufacturers grapple with a shortage of chips affecting the world’s overall automotive and electronics production.

Nintendo said in May that it expects to sell 25.
