Hundreds of businesses and stores in 17 countries around the world are going through one of the worst crises in their history after being hit by the largest “ransomware” attack ever recorded.

The story began 4 days ago, when Miami-based information technology company Cassia was subjected to a ransomware attack.

The American company Cassia provides information technology services to about 40,000 companies worldwide, some of which run computer operating systems for other companiesCassia confirmed that the breach affected users of the “VSA” program, which is used to manage the network of servers, computers and printers.

The attack on the company caused damage to businesses, stores, pharmacies, and fuel stations for nurseries in 17 countriesThe hackers profit through the ransomware attack by encrypting the victims’ data and demanding money in exchange for the ability to gain access to it.

The attackers are demanding a $70 million ransom in bitcoin, in exchange for returning the stolen dataAbout 1,500 companies around the world revealed that they were affected by the attack that took place on Friday, which was attributed to Russian-speaking hackersMost of Coop’s 800 supermarket chains in Sweden were closed for a third day after the hack halted checkout service.

The company announced that it hopes to restart its servers Tuesday with the release of a software update to allow customers to restore their systemsRevell, a Russian-speaking hacker group that commits many ransomware attacks, is believed to be behind Friday’s attack.

A post on the group’s “Happy Blog” blog claimed responsibility for the attack, explaining that it affected “more than a million operating systems”.

Hackers demanded $70 million in bitcoin in exchange for publishing an online tool that allows victims to decrypt stolen data المسWhile it is believed that hackers were reaching out to victims individually to demand lower ransoms, the unprecedented demand for $70 million surprised analysts.

And French cybersecurity expert Robinson Delauger considered that “Revell” may treat the “Cassia” attack as a last mission before it stops working.

The group was responsible for about 29% of ransomware attacks in 2020, according to IBM’s XForce security unit, and looted an estimated $123 million.

“Our hypothesis is that Revell will disappear and this attack is the last major mission it is carrying out,” DeLogoire told AFP, predicting that the group, also called “Sudenokibe”, might re-emerge under a new name
