On Friday, the U

S

government imposed more sanctions on members of the military regime in Myanmar and their relatives, due to the ongoing crackdown on protesters.

According to a statement issued by the U

S

Treasury, the new measures affect 7 senior military officials and 15 relatives of those who were subject to previous sanctions.

The statement said the move comes at a time when the military “continues to suppress the pro-democracy movement in the country and to use lethal force against the people of Burma, including children and members of ethnic minorities.

” The seven military government leaders subject to sanctions are 3 members of the Military Council and the Ministers of Information,

ocial Affairs, Labor and Foreign Economic Affairs.

The statement said the other 15 people were spouses or adult children of previously appointed senior Burmese military officials, whose financial networks contributed to the illicit gains of the military officials.

The sanctions freeze any property these individuals hold in the United

tates and prevent U.

S.

companies and individuals from doing business with them

. The United

tates had already imposed sanctions on Myanmar’s leaders and restrictions on exports since the military staged a coup against civilian leader Aung

an

uu Kyi in early February.
