The man behind the famous ‘Spanish Guy Laughing’ meme has sadly passed away aged 65. Who was El Risitas?

Tributes are flooding social media for El Risitas, a man who is internet famous after an interview he did was turned into a viral meme.

His cause of death is unknown, but he died in Seville, Spain, and was reportedly suffering a long-term illness.

Who was El Risitas?

Juan Joya Borja, better known by his stage name El Risitas, was a Spanish comedian and actor.

He was born in Seville, Spain, in 1956, but didn’t make his first television appearance until 2000 when he appeared on Jesús Quintero’s show El Vagamundo.

He became well-known for his high-pitched laugh which is where his nickname came from, as ‘El Risitas’ translates to English as ‘Mr Giggles’.

El Risitas later appeared in the 2005 film Torrente 3: El Protector, and was even in a Finnish commercial.

El Risitas is the man from this viral meme

El Risitas gained worldwide fame in 2015 when an interview he did was turned into a viral meme.

In 2007, he appeared on Jesús Quintero’s show Ratones Coloraos where he comedically described a story from when he was a kitchen porter.

He spoke about leaving paella pans in the ocean to soak and returning in the morning to find they had washed out to sea.

The video was posted to YouTube in 2007 and gained over a million views, but it wasn’t until eight years later that it gained worldwide acclaim and was turned into a meme.

Many parodies of the video were made, and it became known as the ‘Spanish Guy Laughing’ Meme thanks to El Risitas’ iconic laugh.

El Risitas dies aged 65

Juan Joya Borja has reportedly died this week aged 65.

According to ABC de Sevilla, El Risitas passed away on Wednesday in the Virgin del Rocio Hospital in Seville.

He was being treated at the Hospital de la Caridad where he lived, but was transferred after a sudden relapse in his health.

In September 2020, he was admitted to the Hospital de la Caridad after having a leg amputation as a result of an illness, and he had lived there ever since.

Viral star Juan Joya Borja – known as the man behind the ‘Spanish Laughing Guy’ meme – has died aged 65, with tributes pouring in.

The Spanish comedian and actor, aptly nicknamed ‘El Risitas’ (‘The Giggles’) is best remembered for bringing millions of people joy with his distinctive laugh, when he was interviewed on Spanish TV.

The star told a story about his time working at a restaurant and could not hold it together, descending into fits of giggles.

According to ABC de Sevilla, Borja died on Wednesday in hospital.

He was admitted for health issues last year.

Tributes have poured in for the star, who was also known as the face of the ‘KEKW’ emoji on Twitch.

‘Aww man… RIP to El Risitas, an absolute internet legend,’ one fan wrote. ‘No one is going to forget that infectious KEKW laugh anytime soon.’

‘Today the legend, El Risitas, has passed away,’ another said. ‘Thank you for giving us all so many laughs. R.I.P. Juan Joya Borja.’

‘Juan Joya Borja, Spanish comedian more known as “El Risitas”, “The Giggles” passed away today at the age of 65,’ one more said. ‘He was known for his laugh that everyone love. Giving my condolences to the affected family and friends.’

Borja first went viral in 2014, when his interview got the meme treatment.

In his original clip, he told the story of how he once left 20 paella dishes overnight in the sea to clean when he worked at a restaurant, only to return the next day and find they’d been swept away.

His laugh left viewers in stitches, and fans went on to type unrelated subtitles over the clip, to place him and his laugh in different situations.

Two clips of the original interview have racked up eight and five million views apiece on YouTube, and that’s not to mention the countless parodies also uploaded.
