The French police announced the arrest of 7 people as part of an investigation by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor regarding a visit by a man to Syria and a network of remittances.

The detainees are between 28 and 48 years old, six of whom were born in Russia and one in Georgia.

According to a source familiar with the case, these are from the Chechen community.

Six of them were arrested in the Lower Rhine region and the seventh in Puy-de-Dôme, according to the source, and all of them were detained on charges of “belonging to a terrorist organization” and “financing terrorism” as part of this preliminary investigation by the French intelligence services.

The anti-terrorist criminal justice system in France regularly carries out raids linked to terrorist financing in the Iraqi-Syrian region.

In September 2020, several arrests were carried out to dismantle a network that used cryptocurrencies to finance members of Al-Qaeda and ISIS in Syria in particular.

Judicial proceedings have commenced against 8 of the 30 people arrested
