LONDON (AP) — A rare goal from Aymeric Laporte produced a familiar outcome for Manchester City: winning the League Cup.
For the fourth successive season, Pep Guardiola’s side triumphed in the final of English football’s second-tier competition on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham.
With Tottenham proving hard to find a way past despite City’s domination, it took Laporte heading in his second goal of the season in the 82nd minute from Kevin De Bruyne’s free kick.
What was less familiar for the finalists was playing in front of supporters from both teams. That hasn’t happened since March 2020, but pandemic restrictions were eased to allow a crowd of 7,773 inside Wembley to see the first piece of silverware of the season handed out.
There was also an unfamiliar sight on the touchline, with 29-year-old rookie coach Ryan Mason managing Tottenham following Jose Mourinho’s firing on Monday.
A change in manager couldn’t end Tottenham’s trophy drought since lifting this cup in 2008.
Defending the title completed the first part of a potential treble for Guardiola’s Premier League leaders with an upcoming Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s national team coach has tested positive for the coronavirus, the country’s soccer association announced Sunday.
Hossam el-Badry was diagnosed with COVID-19 after his daughter tested positive earlier this month, the Egyptian Football Association said in a statement. He has been isolated at his home, it said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers are scheduled to square off nine times in September. They’re already playing as though the division title is on the line in late April.
The defending World Series champions overcame another two-homer night from Fernando Tatis Jr. and a strong outing by Blake Snell to rally for a 5-4 victory over the Padres on Saturday.

Manchester City is in the midst of a dominant season but it squandered a shot at a historic quadruple — meaning four championships in one season — when it lost to Chelsea last weekend in the semifinal of the English FA Cup. Pep Guardiola’s team still has a shot at three other crowns: It holds a comfortable lead in the Premier League, is preparing for a semifinal matchup against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and will try to beat Tottenham Sunday to take the Carabao Cup.
A balanced attack has buoyed Man City all season, and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been among the team’s steadiest performances with a club-high 11assists and five goals in Premier League action.
Forward Harry Kane is Tottenham’s star, and he’ll aim to lead the Spurs to an upset victory Sunday.
The two clubs split their previous meetings this season, with Tottenham winning 2-0 in November and Man City rolling to a 3-0 triumph in February. Tottenham sits in sixth place in the Premier League with 53 points, while Man City (77 points) is the runaway leader.
Still, the stakes are high Sunday. And to see which team comes away with a title, you can consider signing up for ESPN+.
