Chelsea will face Manchester City in the first FA Cup semi-final at Wembley as both sides are in the midst of a defining 12-day period of their seasons.

Chelsea have been revitalised under Thomas Tuchel since he took the helm following the sacking of Frank Lampard in January.

They have lost just twice and have reached the semi-finals in both this competition and the Champions League.

They are also firmly in the hunt for a top four spot, trailing current occupants of that position West Ham by just a single point.

Manchester City meanwhile are still in contention for an historic quadruple.

They look to have the Premier League crown wrapped up already and will return to Wembley at the end of the month for the Carabao Cup final against Tottenham.

They also have a mouth-watering semi-final tie against French champions Paris Saint-Germain after overcoming Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League

The FA have confirmed this match will go ahead as scheduled, despite earlier concerns that the game would have clashed with the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh.

Unlike the other semi-final between Southampton and Leicester the following day, fans will not be in attendance for this match.

The first FA Cup semi-final will take place on Saturday, April 17.

The match will start at 5.30pm.

The match will be broadcast on BBC1.

Tammy Abraham has been left out of the Chelsea squad and there are questions about whether Kepa Arrizabalaga or Edouard Mendy will start in goal. Chelsea will also be without midfielder Mateo Kovacic, after he picked up a hamstring injury while preparing for their Champions League quarter-final match against Porto.

Guardiola confirmed that Sergio Aguero will not be fit for the semi-final at Wembley and that Zack Steffen will continue in goal after playing in the earlier rounds of the competition while Ederson was rested.

Aymeric Laporte is available, after recovering from a hip injury that kept him out of the weekend’s defeat to Leeds United.

The match is incredibly tough to call.

Both sides are on a good run of form and capable of playing scintillating football.

Chelsea are full confidence coming into this match, but they have been wasteful in front of goal and that inability to finish off chances could haunt them in big games.

The league table doesn’t lie and Manchester City have consistently been the best team in the land this year.

They swept Chelsea aside 3-1 in the match at Stamford Bridge at the turn of the year, but this version of Chelsea presents a far greater challenge.

Predicted score: Chelsea 1 Manchester City 2 (AET)

Chelsea's top scorer has not been named among the match-day for this afternoon's FA Cup semi-final against Man City

Chelsea’s top scorer has not been named among the match-day for this afternoon’s FA Cup semi-final against Man City

Tammy Abraham has been left out of Chelsea's match-day squad for today's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, understands.

The 23-year-old hasn't featured for the Blues since the 1-1 draw with Southampton on February 20.

An ankle injury suffered against Newcastle United is the major reason for that as Abraham missed six matches.

However, the academy graduate, who remains Chelsea's top scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions, returned to full training during the international break and has since been ready to make his return.

The England international was omitted from the match-day squad for the shock defeat to West Bromwich Albion but was an unused substitute in both Champions League games against Porto and last weekend's victory over Crystal Palace.

Abraham is Chelsea's leading scorer in this season's FA Cup and his goals ensured the Blues progressed beyond Luton Town and Barnsley in the fourth and fifth round respectively.

Yet he will not get a chance to add to his tally today as Tuchel has opted to leave the striker out of his match-day squad for this evening's clash against Pep Guardiola's side at Wembley.

The German coach has publicly insisted he has no problem with Abraham.

He said last weekend: "Tammy has had a bit of a rough time.

He started twice or three times and was twice substituted for tactical reasons at half-time.

He could not have the impact he demands from himself and we wish from him.

"Then he was injured and lost a bit the connection and possibility to fight for his place in the squad.

"The squad has played very well without him, we've had a lot of results without him.

Now we're in the decisive part of the season where it's not so easy to bring players who are injured into the shape.

"We demand a lot of Tammy, he demands a lot of himself.

And he is using every minute to convince us that he needs to be on the pitch.

From there we go on and every three days there is a match.

Hopefully, he stays fit and plays a key role until the end of the season."

Given Tuchel's latest decision, those words feel somewhat hollow.

And there will be understandable debate between now and the end of the campaign as to whether Abraham's long-term future is away from Stamford Bridge.
