YouTuber Jake Paul takes on former UFC fighter Ben Askren tonight in a boxing match.

It’s been branded a sideshow by some and hailed for bringing a new, fresh excitement to the sport by others… but Paul is certainly making his presence felt since entering the world of boxing.

Askren is a decorated MMA fighter with title reigns in Bellator and ONE.

He was unbeaten before reaching the UFC, but went 1-2 in the promotion before ending his career.

He is a famed grappler, while Paul became famous for his exploits on YouTube before deciding to become a professional boxer.

Paul is 2-0 thus far in his career with two finishes, the most devastating of which came last time out against former NBA star Nate Robinson.

You’d think Askren would be the strong favourite but he was never famed for his stand-up striking, and this is his first-ever boxing bout.

Here’s what current and former professional boxers think will happen, as they made their predictions to Switchbox TV for a fight that is the talk of the sport…

The former WBA lightweight champion said: “I’ll be honest, with Ben Askren, I enjoy watching the MMA.

UFC, Bellator, PFL, all sorts of MMA.

“Askren has never been known for his stand-up game, so I think it’s going to be tough for him.

“And Jake Paul, despite what you might say about him, and some of the stuff he does is hard to get your head around, but I do think he’s proved by what he’s done.

“YouTubers have come into boxing and people are going to have their opinions but they’re very clever businessmen.

“I think they’ve looked at Ben Askren and said ‘stylistically, he’ll be made for me.’ His stand-up is not great.

It’s not like he’s fighting a [Conor] McGregor or [Jorge] Masvidal, a stand-up MMA fighter or something like that.

It’s fighting someone who’s not really known for his striking and I think that will be the difference.

“But, fair play, he’s still fighting a combat athlete, it’s not like he’s facing a basketball player or anything like that, no disrespect.

“So I think it will be more competitive, but I do think Jake Paul will win.”

“You would like to think someone with Ben Askren’s MMA background would have more knowledge and fight experience than Jake Paul,” said the retired former world title challenger.

“He’s done quite well in his career.

I’d like to think Ben could lay one on him [laughs].”

Lawrence Okolie, WBO cruiserweight champion said: “Although I might get crucified, once again, from what I’ve seen Ben Askren is a really good MMA fighter.

“However, when it comes to boxing, I do believe Jake Paul is going to win.

“From what I’ve watched of Jake, he throws with a lot of good intent with his shots, which makes him very dangerous.

“He’s obviously training so he’ll be fit and obviously he’s been in high pressure situations before.

“Although, that wasn’t against world-class fighters, to headline a bill and box against someone where you know your YouTube career will take a hit, he’s dealt with pressure.

So I believe he should come out on top, and I personally think by KO.

“Ben is a really good MMA fighter.

It’s not a discredit to him at all, I would never fight him in MMA, but if we’re talking boxing, I believe Jake Paul has what it takes to come out on top.”

The Olympic gold medallist and lightweight world title challenger also believes the American social media star has the edge over the MMA fighter.

“I’m going to go with Jake Paul,” he declared.

“I just think he’s got to produce something good because of all the s**t he talks so I’m expecting to see good things from him.

“The fists have to follow his mouth otherwise he’s going to be the laughing stock I don’t think he wants to be.

So I’m going for Jake Paul for a good win.”

The 12-1 cruiserweight said: “I think Jake Paul will win, you know.

I’ve seen both of them on the bags.

I’ve seen little snippets of both of them training on social media.

“Ben Askren is a wrestler, he’s not really a boxer.

He’s a wrestler, you can’t wrestle in a boxing ring.

“Jake Paul, even though his opposition hasn’t been the greatest, he still has that experience of throwing hands so I have to think he’ll beat him.”

The British middleweight champion said: “I’ll be honest, I’m not to into the YouTube stuff, but Jake Paul can actually fight.

I think he might knock out Ben Askren as well.

“The way he knocked out Nate Robinson last time was amusing to me even though I don’t like boxers getting knocked out, but it was a YouTuber giving it a go.

“I think he knocks out Ben Askren.

Ben Askren has got good wrestling moves, but his stand-up game is not good.

Jake Paul can box.”

Jake Paul will face the greatest test of his boxing ability so far when he faces former MMA fighter Ben Askren in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The YouTube star has promised to deliver a performance worthy of an “elite fighter” amidst a hail of trash talk, while also comparing his pulling power to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“I’m in my third pro fight, I’m fighting eight rounds, headlining one of the biggest pay-per-views that could happen this decade,” Paul said.

“If you look at Floyd Mayweather, his third fight was six rounds, he got paid $7,000 and I don’t think anyone in this room probably watched it.”

Paul has fought twice professionally in the past, debuting with a victory over fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib before he knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson inside two rounds.

Askren, 37, retired from mixed martial arts after he went 1-2 in the UFC, and was famously on the receiving end of the fastest knockout in UFC history when he was defeated by Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239.

Paul hopes victory will see him set up a money-spinning bout against former UFC kingpin Conor McGregor.

“I think we both are on a road to each other,” Paul said.

“You know he wants another boxing fight, he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao – he would get toasted.

He just keeps on taking Ls (losses).

“I think him fighting me would not only be his money fight, but it would technically be the ‘easiest’ challenge right? I think fighting Jake Paul would probably be easier than fighting Manny Pacquiao and it would be just as big, and I think we’re a lot closer to a Jake Paul-Conor McGregor fight than anyone thinks – I think it could happen in the next 24 months.”

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the fight this weekend.
