The couple had been together since 2008 but knew each other for many years, initially dating in 1980 when Jane was 17.

The singer and presenter previously opened up about their relationship when she chatted to Olly Murs on Chris Evans’ Virgin Radio Breakfast show last March.

Jane revealed that she had been nervous when she met her late partner again, as she worried he might be married and that he wouldn't remember her.

But, she shared, that wasn't the case.

"He said, 'Look I’ve just been through a divorce, here’s my card if you want to talk to me.' I couldn’t wait.

I ran home from Loose Women, I couldn’t wait to talk to him because a lot had happened."

The 58-year-old, who was previously married to her former manager Henrik Brixen, went on: "I thought what if he doesn’t know who I am, I really did.

I thought he’d be like 'Who are you?'"

In November 2019, Jane paid a sweet tribute to Eddie in Good to Know magazine.

"He is very funny and he makes me laugh every day," she said.

Loose Women star Jane McDonald is mourning her life partner Ed Rothe.

The musician and TV favourite, 58, social media account revealed the sad news that fiance Ed died from lung cancer on March 26 in a heartbreaking Twitter post on Wednesday.

Jane's page told that a funeral for her beloved Ed – who was the former drummer of the 1960's band The Searchers – took place today and praised the NHS staff who took care of him at The Wakefield Hospice in the months before his death.

The first Tweet, accompanied by a selfie of Jane and Ed, read: "Announcement 1/2: It is with immense sadness that we share the news that Jane’s beloved long term partner, Ed, passed away on Friday 26th March.

"He had been battling lung cancer for the last few months.

We would like to thank everyone for all their help and support…"

Shortly after another message was sent out, that said: "Announcement 2/2: …during this very difficult time, especially the NHS staff and the wonderful team at The Wakefield Hospice.

"The funeral took place earlier today and we would please ask for your kindness in observing Jane’s privacy for her and Ed’s family at this sad time."

Under the post, several of Jane's fans sent her condolences and wishes of support as she navigates the tough time.

One typed: "Oh Jane, I'm so very sad to hear your sad news.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

Sending prayers for strength at this time to you and your family.

Fly high Ed xx"

A second added: "Oh Jane, I'm so very sad to hear your sad news.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

Sending prayers for strength at this time to you and your family.

Fly high Ed xx."

Others echoed: "Jane, there are no words but I just wanted to say I’m so so so sorry.

Sending so much love.

Look after yourself XXXX" and "Take care Jane sorry for your loss."

Jane and Ed first dated when she was 18 but they split as the rocker was "too wild" for her.

They then rekindled their romance 27 years later after an unexpected reunion at the ITV Studios.

At the time, she was working on Loose Women and Ed was in the building as a guest on This Morning.

She plucked up the courage to chat to him, after fearing he had forgotten her, and he offered her his business card and told her to get in touch.

Recalling the moment in her autobiography, Riding The Waves, she wrote: “He said, ‘Look I’ve just been through a divorce, here’s my card if you want to talk to me'.”

Keen to reconnect with Ed, she told in her book: "I couldn’t wait, I ran home from Loose Women, I couldn’t wait to talk to him because a lot had happened.

“I thought what if he doesn’t know who I am, I really did.

I thought he’d be like ‘Who are you?’”

Laughing, she said: “He was really rock and roll in those days, well he still is, but he’s calmed down a lot now.

Giving more details on why they split when she was a teenager, Jane wrote: “I was a girl from Wakefield and I thought, ‘I can’t handle this,’ so I got in the car and went home.

We never fell out, we just split up really.

“So then we just saw each other [again] and then boom.”

Jane and Eddie got back together in 2008, six years after she split from ex-husband Henrik Brixen.

She told the Mirror in 2011: “I was bereft after my second marriage broke up.

I didn’t date anyone seriously for seven years and could hardly expect anything with my track record.

But this guy takes my breath away.

“I’m very lucky.

Normally when you meet someone after a long time they look nothing like you remember, or they are married.

“My life has been a lot of being in the right place at the right time, so being back with Eddie has something of destiny about it.

We both realise we are lucky to have found each other again.”

Cruising with Jane McDonald star Jane previously shared how she and Ed managed to keep their spark alive – and her being away for work helped.

Jane told her Loose Women colleagues: “It does us.

I think he quite likes the fact that I’m not there.

“I think he likes the fact he can eat what he wants, watch telly when he wants, get up when he wants.”

Sharing how she and Ed would make whenever she returned home special, she added: “I think he then likes it when I come back.

It’s a bit like a courtship.

It’s like ooh she’s back, girlfriend's here.

“And then I go away again and everything is wonderful.”

Jane previously shared that Ed was a huge support in pushing her in her career.

“He gave up his career for me which is lovely, he was in The Searchers, " she told.

“He said, ‘Ok, I’ll take a step back and push you in your career now,’ he’s just great.”
