Rachel Bilson said she was “super bummed” when former classmate Rami Malek asked her to take down an old photo of them from her Instagram.
According to Yahoo! News, back in February 2019 Bilson shared a photo of herself with Malek as teenagers on a trip to New York.
They both attended Notre Dame High School in in Sherman Oaks, California (the same school that Kristen Dunst attended).
39-year-old Bilson said she was amused by the “dorky” picture she posted just ahead of Malek’s Oscar win for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, but he was not comfortable with it.
The photo is no longer available to view, but is described as Malek pointing to the camera wearing a black sweater, white T-shirt and gold chain while being hugged by a curly-haired and grinning Bilson.
Captioned,”Hey @ramimalek where’d you get that gold chain? #tbt #oscarworthy #dontforgetthelittlepeople.” A week after she posted the photo, she received a direct message from Malek.
She recounts, “It wasn’t like, ‘Hey! How are you?’ It was straight to: ‘I would really appreciate if you take that down.
I’m a really private person.’”
star said, “I had posted a throwback of us from our senior trip to New York, Broadway.
We’re super nerdy… just the dorkiest picture of the both of us.
But I throw it up, ’cause it’s funny and I think it’s so important to be able to make fun of yourself.” Bilson added that Malek’s stylist, who is also friends with her said “it’s not a great picture of him.”
Feeling badly about upsetting Malek, Bilson realized she should’ve found something more flattering and wrote back to him an apology message saying, “‘I’m so sorry.
Go get the Oscar! You’re doing amazing.’ And I never hear anything back, which is fine.
But I was super bummed because he was always so nice and we were good friends.”

Rachel Bilson claimed Rami Malek asked her to delete a throwback high school photo of them from Instagram while he was in the running to win an Oscar
Thanks for contacting us.
We've received your submission.
It’s the little things that Rami Malek can’t seem to laugh about.
Rachel Bilson claimed in a new interview that the “Mr.
Robot” star asked her to remove an old high school photo of them from her Instagram while he was in the running to win an Oscar for “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
“I had posted a throwback of us from our senior trip to New York, Broadway.
We were super-nerdy, just the dorkiest picture of both of us,” she recalled on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast of the pic, which she shared in 2019.
“But I throw it up ’cause it’s funny, and I think it’s so important to be able to make fun of yourself, and he had like a gold chain, and I’m like, ‘Rami where’d you get the gold chain?’ Whatever.
So I’m just being funny, we were good friends.”
The former “The O.C.” star, 39, quickly realized their friendship wasn’t as solid as she thought, as she received a direct message from Malik, 39, asking her to remove it.
“It wasn’t like, ‘Hey! How are you?’ It was straight to, ‘I would really appreciate if you take that down.
I’m a really private person,’” she said.
“I was like, ‘Oh, s–t! OK.’ I get really hot and start sweating.
I’m all nervous, like, ‘Oh God! What did I do?’ He was a good friend, it’s a funny picture … you know? I don’t take myself that seriously,” Bilson continued.
Bilson deleted the photo as soon as she saw his message and sent him a nice note back rooting for him to win the coveted award — which he did end up getting — but she never heard back.
“But I was super-bummed because he was always so nice and we were good friends, and I’m a big fan of not taking yourself seriously, especially at that level of fame and talent,” Bilson explained.
“But look, he wants to be super-respected, it’s his thing, so I respected it.
I took it down.
I was just a little bummed at how it was handled.”
The actors both attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif.
The “Jumper” actress said she later heard from Malek’s stylist that he didn’t approve of the photo because he didn’t think he looked good in it.
“She was like, ‘Well, it’s not a great picture of him.’ OK, I’m sorry.
We were 16!” Bilson said.
“It was what it was.
It was right before the Oscars, and I remember [‘The O.C.’ creator] Josh Schwartz being like, ‘You did him dirty! He’s about to be nominated.’ And I’m like, ‘What do you mean? This was my friend; it’s a funny picture.’”
Malek’s rep didn’t immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.
