NEWS…

BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Coronation Street will be paying tribute to Johnny Briggs tonight in a special ITV documentary.

The documentary will air at 8pm and will look at Johnny’s life playing Mike Baldwin in the soap for thirty years from 1976-2006.

Johnny died last month on February 28 and his family’s statement read: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.’

In the statement released by Johnny’s family, it said how the actor: ‘passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side.

He was 85.’

Mike Baldwin was businessman and owned Underworld, and also became known for his long standing rivalry with Ken Barlow (William Roache).

Mike’s feud with Ken led to a huge love triangle storyline with Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) that gripped the nation.

The documentary airing tonight will discuss how huge this affair story was.

Mike was also quite the ladies’ man during his time on the cobbles, and ended up getting married four times on screen.

Mike was the father of three sons: Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) who is still on screen today, Mark Redman (Paul Fox) and Danny Baldwin (Bradley Walsh).

Johnny left the show in 2006 after Mike was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005.

After a confused Mike left hospital, Ken found him, and after he suffered a heart attack, Mike died in his rival’s arms.

Johnny was most known for playing Mike Baldwin, but away from Corrie, he also starred in BBC One’s Doctors and Holby City, and the TV series Z Cars and Echo Beach.

But did the Coronation Street legend have any children?

Johnny Briggs has a total of six children.

He has three adult sons, and three adult daughters.

In real life, Johnny was a father of six, having been married twice – once to Caroline Sinclair from 1961 to 1975, and later to Christine Allsop from 1977 to 2006.

He had six children: three daughters Karen, Jennifer and Stephanie; and three sons Anthony, Michael and Mark.

Karen is Briggs' only daughter from his first marriage to Caroline Sinclair.

She was born in 1966, making her 55 years old.

Jennifer was the first child born out of Briggs' marriage with his second wife.

She was born in 1978, making her 43 this year.

Born in 1982, Stephanie is 39 years old.

Her mother is Christine Allsop.

Anthony, alongside his brother Michael, was born from Briggs' second marriage with Christine Allsop.

Mark Briggs was born in 1963, making him 58 this year.

His mother was Briggs' first wife, Caroline Sinclair.

Johnny Briggs, who played Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street for 30 years, passed away aged 85.

His family said he had died peacefully after "a long illness, with family by his side" and asked for privacy to "remember the wonderful times we had with him".

The actor played the role for 30 years and is best remembered for his famous bust up with Ken Barlow, played by Bill Roache, after he had an affair with his wife Deirdre, played by the late Anne Kirkbride.

Johnny joined the soap in 1976 and went on to appear in 2,349 episodes before he left the show in 2006.

In a statement his family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.

“He passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side.  He was 85.

“We politely ask for privacy at this time, so that we can quietly grieve as a family and remember the wonderful times we had with him.

Thank you.”
