An investigation has been launched into Boris Johnson's behaviour while he was Mayor of London after a businesswoman at the centre of a public money scandal revealed they had been in a relationship.
The Prime Minister has come under inceasing scrutiny today following the claims from Jennifer Arcuri that they had been having an affair for four years between 2012 and 2016.
Boris had denied any relationship took place when it came to light she had been allowed on three taxpayer-funded trade missions despite her businesses not meeting the criteria for the trips.
Now the Greater London Authority – responsible for the mayor’s office – has launched an inquiry to see if he breached principles of the job.
Len Duvall, the chair of the GLA oversight committee which is conducting the investigation said: "Our investigation will consider whether Boris Johnson conducted himself in a way that’s expected from anyone in that position.
"It’s important we get those answers, because Londoners deserve to have their politicians held accountable."
Boris spoke at a series of technology events organised by Jennifer, who received £126,000 of taxpayer money in event sponsorships and grants.
£100,000 came via a government grant in 2019.
Caroline Pidgeon AM, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member and GLA Oversight committee member, told The Mirror : “We should not forget that the extensive IOPC’s investigation concluded that Johnson should have declared an interest, and that this failure could have amounted to a breach of the code of conduct while he was Mayor of London.
“The intimate relations of politicians are a personal matter, but favouring people in awarding contracts and public money because of a personal relationship is a totally different matter.
“The case for Boris Johnson being summoned and having to answer vital questions over whether he was putting personal interests before the interests of Londoners has suddenly become stronger."

Boris Johnson is a cynical liar and a cheat, a charlatan who treats the country as badly as he treats his family and mistress Jennifer Arcuri.
We know that from the 126,000 Covid deaths, from the slap in the face for nurses, growing poverty, bad Brexit deal, aid cuts that condemn to death the world’s most desperate people and the smallest army in 307 years.
Yet apologists who watched smiling as he escaped scandals worse than the misdemeanours bringing down lesser politicians, or giggled about good old ladies’ man Boris, may wonder if his luck is about to run out.
Because you don’t need to be a bishop kicking a hole in a stained-glass window to conclude that Johnson is a repulsive slime ball for sleeping with at least one of his many other women in the family home.
Should a settee appear on the pavement outside the East London home of now divorced second wife Marina Wheeler, we’ll know how the furniture was divided.
The obvious public interest in his sordid private life concerns the collision with his civic duties.
Taxpayer subsidised and funded trips and favours for an American he was secretly sleeping with while Mayor of London are a matter of concern.
But it doesn’t stop there.
The reckless “I don’t care, rules aren’t for me” approach of a figure who was sacked twice for deception are dangerous for our nation, too.
Slapdash Johnson as Foreign Secretary played into the hands of the Iranian regime and added to jailed Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s horror.
A half-baked Prime Minister’s oven-ready Brexit deal never existed, as shellfish exporters and others are discovering to their cost.
And the successful NHS mass vaccination programme was no protection for the 126,000 people who died due to avoidable mistakes as Johnson fatally flunked the biggest test of all.
I defy anybody, including Conservative MPs, to read Arcuri’s account of their four-year affair and argue that Johnson is a joker, a nice guy, some-one you could trust.
What he does in private is what he does in public.
When people open their eyes he will finally receive his comeuppance.
