Danny Ings would be a ‘brilliant signing’ for Manchester City and would ‘score more goals than Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus’ in Pep Guardiola’s current team.
But talkSPORT has been told Tottenham should also be looking to sign the Southampton man, with Darren Bent branding him the ‘perfect replacement’ should Harry Kane leave the London club.
And Bent believes that is a very real possibility this summer, with reports linking City with 28-year-old Ings ahead of the transfer window, as the Premier League leaders search for a replacement for Aguero.
City’s leading goalscorer is history is set to end his glittering career at the Etihad in the summer when his contract expires, and Ings is viewed as an ‘attainable’ option to replace Aguero immediately rather than enter the race for in-demand Erling Haaland.
Ings could be available for a bargain price with the former Liverpool striker set to enter the final year of his Saints contract.
Southampton are willing to make Ings the highest paid player in the club’s history to tie him down to a new deal, with a £100,000-a-week wage packet on the table, but talkSPORT understands talks are stalling over a £20million release clause.
Ings has revived his career since joining Southampton from Liverpool in 2018, scoring 42 goals in 89 games for the club in his two-and-a-half seasons to date.
And while some fans may not be convinced, Rangers and Scotland legend Ally McCoist insisted he will ‘score for fun’ in a City shirt and is better than their current striker options.
“I think he would score more goals than the centre forwards Manchester City play there at the moment,” said the former striker on Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Sergio Aguero hasn’t had as much game time this season he would have liked and certainly I thought he would get, and it looks like he’s on his way out.
“And if you’re asking me do I think Danny Ings would get into that side and score goals – absolutely!
“I think 42 goals in 89 games with Southampton is great figures and that would indicate to me if he goes to a team like City, who create an awful lot more chances, I think he would be battering all sorts of goals.
“That’s what he does, he scores all sorts of goals, tap-ins, chips, headers, everything, of the goalkeeper, rebounds – he’s a top top finisher.
“I just think that would be brilliant for Manchester City and great for him – he’d walk up there and it would be a really interesting move.
“I know Southampton fans will be shouting at the wireless, but that’s something that excites me, he’d score goals for fun at City.”
And former England striker Bent agrees, saying landing Ings this summer is a no-brainer for City.
“If you’re talking about someone replacing Aguero, it’s virtually impossible, you’re not going to find someone who can come in and do what he has done at that club,” he remarked.
“But I really like the idea of Danny Ings going there, I think he’s a very very good centre forward and he’s been brilliant over the last couple of seasons.
He has been plagued by injuries, but I think he’d do a job there.
“You put him around better players who create so many opportunities, he is an unbelievable finisher, really really good finisher, so if you put him in situations where he can score goal I can guarantee you he’d score more goals in that team than Gabriel Jesus.
“The only thing that would put people off this signing is snobbery.
Fans probably think they should be going for players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, but signing a player of Ings’ quality is a no-brainer.
“He’s a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and if I was at Man City, I’d get him in now, get someone like him in the door for decent money, and then go after your Haalands or your Mbappes.”
But Man City won’t be the only club after him this summer, according to Bent, who believes his old club Spurs will be keeping a keen eye on his situation on the south coast amid the uncertainty over talisman Kane’s future.
“Other teams will want him, 100 per cent, and one club for me personally that will have to look at him seriously is Tottenham,” added the former striker.
“Because at the need of the season if they don’t win anything, I can see Harry Kane going, ‘enough is enough, I need to move on’.
“And if Kane does go, I think Danny Ings would be the perfect replacement.
“I don’t think it’s a case of just Manchester City coming for him, I genuinely think they’ll be four or five teams – someone for that quality for cheap? I can see a number of top teams in the Premier League going for Danny Ings.”
